Hi RSEL mentors
We've had enormous trouble booking a room for the exhibition, which is just before the party on Wednesday December 5th. The only solution we've been able to find is to extend the booking for the Mason Lounge so that the exhibition can be in there before the party. It's not an ideal space, as it doesn't have big screens, but on the other hand it has plenty of space and lots of small screens which can be grouped so that each presentation takes place in its own little area. We've told people this year that the sound track will only be used on the submitted version of the presentations, so people can talk visitors through the prepared slides as they tour the groups. From your experience last year, do you have any other suggestions about optimising the benefit of this event? Any ideas gratefully received!
I like the idea of the soundtrack only being in the submitted version - there were some technical issues last year and it will give this year's students a chance to 'sell' their projects to visitors.
ReplyDeleteAre we allowed to come along? I'd like to see what students have been doing and how it compares to last year.
It might be good to give groups a specific amount of time to talk to each guest as I think this would help to make sure students speak to as many people as possible - just an idea :-)
Despite the lack of screens in the Mason Lounge I wonder if (and hope) it actually might be a positive thing in terms of attendees, due to the party following straight afterwards.
ReplyDeleteThis ties in with my main thought re: the soundtrack, as at least in my group last year we had divided the sections up so as each to take the lead on one. I'd just be concerned that if there were absences to the exhibition this would strain those members who do actually turn up, as they'd be responsible for covering the slides of absent members. But of course if all group members turn up then that shouldn't be a problem.
Will the need to talk through the slides to visitors mean there will be less scope for the students to move between the presentations?
Thank you both for your helpful suggestions. It's really useful to see things from the students' point of view. I'll try to bear in mind the issues you raise as we finalise plans for the exhibition.
ReplyDeleteI'll check with this year's presenters, but I can't see why they wouldn't want you to see their projects - and people will all be around for the social anyway.
Thanks again.
